About
My paintings reflect a life-long endeavor to combine multiple creative impulses, including visual art, dance, photography, and video. I often work from photographs, which trigger a memory of the sensation of the physical experience of having been in a certain place at a certain time,  and I then attempt to translate that experience to the medium of paint.  I focus on the use of gesture in painting (with brushwork) - expressing the emotional intent and variations in qualities as if in a dance. I sometimes use paintings in live performances and create videos that reflect this process.

Biography
Rachel Thorne Germond has presented her visual art in New York City, Wellfleet, MA, Bisbee, AZ and the Monadnock region. She earned a B.F.A. in Studio Art from Cornell University’s College of Art, Architecture and Planning and later achieved an M.F.A in Dance and Choreography from the University of Illinois Champaign Urbana. At Cornell she studied painting, photography and printmaking with Eleanor Mikus, Patrick Webb, Elisabeth Meyer, Zevi Blum, Zarina, Barry Perlus and Jean Locey. Her early training included tutoring by her grandmother, Yankee Magazine cover artist BeaTrix Thorne Sagendorph, mother Jane Thorne, and father Russell Clark Germond. She currently studies painting with Jean Mann.
